Spring sports are in full swing! Below are updates from some of our LMHS spring sports teams.
TRACK & FIELD
The girls are currently 4-0 in the Suburban One Freedom Division. Senior Amelia Ogawa has qualified for the District 1 Championships in the 1600 and 3200, and Freshman Annie Moniz qualified in the 800 and 3200. The girls 4×400 and 4×800 relays also qualified for Districts. The 4×800 currently has the 2nd fastest time in the state and became the first relay in LM history to qualify for the Championship of America final at the Penn Relays! Additionally, Sophomore Mila Tankhilevich is one of the top hurdlers and jumpers in the league. The boys are 2-2 in the Freedom Division. Juniors Aaron Levitan and David Reitzen and Senior Carl Barnette are leading the sprint and hurdle teams. Juniors Dylan Sandler and Vincent Frankina, along with sophomores Trey Henry and Michael Hoch, are leading the middle distance team. The boys are ranked in the top 5 in 8 events in the league and hope to improve as the team gets closer to the League Championships. Go Lions!
GIRLS LACROSSE
The Girls Lacrosse team has had an impressive run so far this spring. Currently the girls are 7-6 with 5 games to go in their season. This year, their current mark of 7 wins is the most wins by a Lower Moreland Girls Lacrosse team ever, and the season is not yet over. Led by captains Meg Halpern, Abbie Wasserstrom, Jess Pachman, and Kenna Rozanski, the team continues to improve every day. Some notable games this season include their home game with ANC on 3/20, where the girls pulled out a 10-5 victory over their Huntingdon Valley rivals. The girls finished out the game with 6 goals in the 4th quarter. On April 12th, in a night game against Neshaminy, an extremely tight competition went into overtime, and Kenna Rozanski came up with a sudden death goal to help the Lions pull out the 9-8 victory. Additionally, on April 17th, in a home game against Quakertown, the girls were again in a heated battle with a team that beat them 20-2 the season before, and they ended up taking another game into overtime. When it mattered the most, Abbie Wasserstrom scored the sudden death goal and led the Lions to a 11-10 win over the Panthers.
Coach Wittmer and Coach Lawlor couldn’t be more impressed with the girls’ dedication and the growth of the program. The girl’s have big games coming up against long time rivals the Jenkintown Drakes (Home on May 3rd), the New Hope Lions (Home on May 8th), and the William Tennent Panthers (Home on May 1st). Come out to support the Girls Lacrosse team for their Senior Night as they take on the William Tennent Panthers at Valley Center Park on May 1st at 6 PM.
SOFTBALL
This is a rebuilding year for the LMHS Softball Team. After losing most of the team to graduation the last two years, they are a very young team this year. With a total of just 12 players, the team consists of 6 freshmen, 4 sophomores, 1 junior, and 1 senior, who is on the team for the first time. According to Coach Reese, the team has two strong pitchers in Sophomore Maddie Menchhofer and Freshman Izzy O’Brien, and the team has been playing very solid defense recently. The girls have made great strides, and the coaching staff is very proud of the improvement the team has made since the beginning of the season. The girls currently have 2 wins: 5-3 over Cheltenham and 4-1 over Wissahickon. With 8 games remaining in the season, they hope to finish strong with competitive games against Abington, New Hope-Solebury (2 games), Springfield, Villa Joseph Marie, and Cheltenham. The team will be celebrating their one and only senior, Nina Dudek, on Thursday, May 9, 2024, when they play Springfield at home.
BASEBALL
The boys baseball team is currently doing well with a current season record of 6-5. The team has many seniors to celebrate this year: Drew Dorval, Iggy Gonzales, Tim Donahue, Connor Hegedus, Mason Tammaro and Ethan Jarosiewicz. Their senior night will be on May 2nd, the day of their home game against Cheltenham. They will be missed!
BOYS TENNIS
The Boys Tennis team has continued their winning ways this year after compiling a 14-2 record and making a run to the State Championships last year for Teams and Singles. This year, the team has a 9-3 record with one more match to play in the regular season. Sophomore Max Spodik won the Singles Championships for both the Freedom Division and District One 2A, and will compete at States later in the month. On April 24th, the team beat Cheltenham 4-3 to win the league title!! Next up for the boys will be a District One 2A semifinal matchup with Bishop Shanahan on May 1st. If the team wins that match and the final the Monday after, they will be moving on to the State Championships for Teams in a few weeks. Keep up the good work!
