Lower Moreland’s Girl Up 2030 Club is celebrating its 5-year anniversary this school year! Girl Up’s mission is to support and connect young women to build their leadership skills across the globe in order to advocate for gender equality and social change. Through leadership development, skill-building, and impactful community programs, Girl Up has been able to foster a generation of confident, compassionate leaders.
Girl Up 2030 at Lower Moreland is split up into 4 sectors: Climate Action, Fundraising, Storytelling, and Public Relations. Students are able to join these sectors at the start of every academic year.
The Climate Action (CA) committee works to learn how women in STEM can tackle environmental issues locally. This sector runs clean-ups at Masons Mill Park and the LMMS/LMHS outer campus with the Environmental Club. Global workshops and summits on youth-led climate initiatives are a part of the activities the CA committee partakes in as well.
Storytelling, run by 4-year member and Vice President Anna Galdo, focuses on sharing powerful women’s stories within and outside the community through podcasts. Recent interviewees from LM have included Mrs. McNemar and Dr. Bram from the science department. Also, this sector creates social media posts for Women Empowerment Wednesday.
The Fundraising committee is consistently the largest and busiest committee, organizing events to raise money for overlooked women’s issues such as the Pink Tax and female equality in education. The Her Drive was a major success in recent years, where Girl Up had a bake sale and collected physical and monetary donations for feminine hygiene products for women in need.
Lastly, the Public Relations team, led by Aleena Thomas and Anya Shurin, works for community outreach with Pennsylvania’s Girl Up Coalition to build our chapter, creating relationships across various platforms like Instagram (@lmhs_girlup) and Girl Up’s website.
As we approach the milestone year of 2030, Girl Up’s mission is more relevant than ever! The initiative remains committed to empowering young women and ensuring they have the skills and opportunities necessary to lead. Girl Up 2030 will continue to work to build the potential of female youth at Lower Moreland!
