As students begin experiencing the hustle and bustle of the start of the school year, it can be hard to decide what clubs to join. While Lower Moreland High School has a variety of extracurricular organizations, many students want to find ways to explore potential career interests. For those with passions in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics, the new STEM Club at LMHS is the perfect outlet to collaborate with others and learn about various fields of study.
I spoke to the founder and President of STEM Club, Junior Lola Monroy, to understand more about the club’s mission.
What gave you the idea to start the club?
“I didn’t think there was something like it at the school where people could learn about career opportunities, and I knew I wanted to create something more specific, something I had interest in. Additionally, I knew a lot of people in the school were really interested in the idea, and I wanted them to have the opportunity to explore STEM.”
What does an average meeting look like?
“We’re a fairly new club, but so far we plan on having guest speakers come in at meetings to explain their careers, how they got to where they are, and things that interest them.”
What is your favorite part of STEM Club?
“I really like that a lot of people are passionate about STEM. And I’m excited for more women in STEM.”
Though the club was only recently created, STEM club is a promising resource for all students interested in the sciences. With the help of advisors Mr. Tamaccio and Ms. Hesney, both physics teachers, the club hopes to invite guest speakers to their meetings and devise engaging activities for its members. Led by President Lola Monroy and Vice President Angie Ahmed, both Juniors, the club seems to have an abundance of exciting ideas and projects for this year.
