Last school year, amidst their busy schedules, three freshmen, Zayna George, Zayla George, and Jaela George, took it upon themselves to bring a new club to Lower Moreland High School: the Multicultural Club. Focused on ensuring the comfort and engagement of the students and community of Lower Moreland, the club currently meets every other Monday to discuss issues and plan its events.
The teacher coordinators of the club, Ms. Mulroy and Dr. Mollett, oversee the club’s functions and planning. Within the club there are four subcommittees, each led by one or two of the club’s members. The committees are Event Planning, Social Media/Fundraising, Heritage Month, and Curriculum. The event planning committee plans small events throughout the year, but mainly focuses on preparation for the club’s main event, Multicultural Night. LMHS’s Multicultural Night will take place this year on Thursday, March 14th at the high school. The club is currently starting to propose ideas and fundraising to the community as they prepare for this night. Full of different foods, outfits, performances, games, and more, Multicultural Night is an amazing opportunity for students and families to be exposed to different cultures and celebrate diversity within the school. Another subcommittee, Curriculum, works to add diversity to curriculum and learning within the classroom. The fundraising subcommittee focuses on fundraising for both club events and worldwide organizations to benefit those in need. The subcommittee in charge of Heritage Month works on the club’s bulletin board to advertise each month’s holidays and important cultural days, along with the club’s ongoing events that month.
Zayna says, “We hope to bring together not only the school, but also our community through the understanding of different cultures and traditions.” Jaela adds that the club seeks to “create an atmosphere in which everyone feels included and represented in our school community.” The Multicultural Club is excited for its upcoming events and encourages anyone interested in attending a club meeting to stop by room 110.
