If you’ve been in the halls of Lower Moreland recently, then you may have seen the endless flyers and posters for the annual election season.
From campaign tags like, “Don’t be a whim, vote for Yim,” and “Need a hero, vote Shapiro,” running for the class of 2025 officer positions was a difficult proposition. After a tight race, our winners for this year are President Aubrie Zucaro, Vice President Chelsea Cohen, Treasurer Becky Ling, and Secretary Alyssa Gottesman.
These girls have been running for leadership positions since the beginning of high school, so they know how to amplify their voices. Here were their responses when they were asked, “What did you do specifically for your campaign?”
Becky created a flier online, posted it on social media, and used verbal awareness to get people to vote for her. In addition, she passed out Hi-Chews, Jolly Ranchers, and Sour Patch Kids. She emphasized putting yourself out there and being genuine with what you hope to achieve.
Alyssa also made a flyer with a special slogan: “You want fabu-Lyss? Vote Alyssa Gottesman for Secretary!” She also recognized everyone’s favorite parts of election week are treats and candy. We all know Alyssa loves to bake, so she told three of her classes she would bake for them if she won class secretary (a pretty fool-proof system!).
Chelsea’s main goal with her Vice President campaign was to make herself as accessible as possible. Five other people were running against her, so she knew she had to step up her game to win the majority. She posted TikToks and hung flyers, but Chelsea realized that what gets people’s support is food. “Everyone loves a free donut or piece of chocolate, so I figure why not give the people what they want and make them happy!” Chelsea exclaimed.
Finally, President Aubrie used the slogans, “If you want success, vote for the best!” and “Thinking about how amazing junior year will be as your president,” making flyers and posting them on social media platforms. Stickers and candies were handed out to get people excited and aware of the upcoming election. As a former Vice President and now two-time President, she felt those methods would be the most efficient and effective.
Junior year is oftentimes the most challenging year for high school students. When the girls were asked, “What do you hope to achieve with your new leadership position this year?”, the responses were as follows:
As treasurer, Becky stated, “I want to get some good fundraisers going early in the year to boost our class funds, which will help out with J-prom and other events. I also want to try to organize school-wide events like the volleyball tournament, which was very successful, and maybe a spikeball one as well. We hope to plan a fun class trip that everyone will enjoy and create some nice class merchandise!”
Alyssa Gottesman, 3-peat Secretary for the grade, stressed, “It was so rewarding to win, especially with Chelsea, Aubrie, and Becky since we worked so well together last year!” She is so excited for this year, especially for prom. Alyssa stated, “I want our grade to have the amazing prom experience everyone dreams of. Expect sports events, fundraisers, field trips, etc., from the class of 2025, and I can’t wait for another amazing year!”
Vice President Chelsea commends her fellow officers as they collectively want to make junior year as memorable and fun as possible. “Junior year already has this stigma of stress, hard work, difficulty, etc., so it’s our job to push out events that will allow our class to let loose a little bit and have fun with their friends.” Cohen also wants to continue fundraising for the class, so she says to look out for upcoming events. She is excited about what this year has in store and grateful to have these three girls by her side.
Last, but certainly not least, Aubrie explained, “With the leadership position I have been so honored to receive, I hope the students will feel like they have more of a voice. I also hope to create more community with activities that unite the grade.” While emphasizing that junior year is a big year for everyone, the ultimate goal for this school year will be to create fun and exciting activities, giving everyone something to look forward to. Some of Aubrie’s ideas include field trips, multiple sports tournaments, fundraisers, bake sales, fun merch, and prom. “I hope to make it overall an amazing year to look back on and remember!!”
Overall, the class of 2025 is in good hands, and we can’t wait for another year!
